TRANSCRIPT:
CBS announced this week that it is ending The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
Removing a beloved program that has been hosted by the same person for almost 10 years — let alone, has aired on the network since 1993 — is quite the choice, given that it is one of the most highly watched shows on CBS, and that, earlier this year, the network bragged in a press release about the show being “the #1 program in Late Night for the ninth consecutive season.”
So it’s clear that something else is afoot here — and it has to do with politics. As the Wrtiers Guild of America, which represents television writers working for the show, noted in statement regarding the cancellation, the decision to end the program came after CBS agreed to settle “a baseless lawsuit” brought against the network by Donald Trump, and just days after Colbert criticized that decision for being “a big fat bribe,” given a planned merger between Paramount and Skydance, which would need the Trump administration’s approval.
WGA is calling for New York to investigate the ending of the show.
Trump is a fascist — he’s demonstrated a deep-seated hatred for media that is critical of him, and has used the office of the presidency to punish the press and others that he despises. In acquiescing to Trump — first by settling its lawsuit, and now by ending the career of one of the most outspoken public voices speaking out against him — CBS and Paramount have demonstrated they are passive supporters of fascism.
There’s still time to fix this, by reversing course and letting The Late Show remain on the air beyond next year. Hopefully, Paramount will do the right thing — but I won’t be holding my breath.
