The Oklahoma State Department of Education has to find 55,000 Christian Bibles to supply schools with across the state. Trump may reap the benefits of them doing so.
Firstly, this is an inappropriate action, part of a decision by the department in June to interject religion in public schools’ curriculums — a clear violation of the separation of church and state standard.
But something else is amiss here. The state has created some very strict standards for which kind of bibles they can use — promoting not just a religious requirement but also a Christian nationalist agenda by mandating that they also contain the U.S. Constitution, the Pledge of Allegiance, the Bill of Rights and other government documents.
Those things should be taught in a civics class, of course, but not intermingled with religion in a public classroom setting.
Importantly, only one bible fits that standard: the one Donald Trump was peddling earlier this year. What a weird coincidence!
Notably, the bibles, which are being sold by musician Lee Greenwood, cost $60 each. Trump receives fees from sales for him giving his endorsement to them, and has already made hundreds of thousands of dollars from the venture.
Jesus Christ Himself wasn’t too keen on people profiting from faith in God, but I’m guessing the far-right Christians peddling this nonsensical action aren’t too worried about that. What a sham.
